что такое university entrance qualification

University entrance qualification

If you want to study at a German higher education institution, you need what is called a “Hochschulzugangsberechtigung” – or “university entrance qualification”. This is a school-leaving certificate which qualifies you for university study. If your secondary-school certificate is deemed insufficient for study in Germany, you will have to attend a foundation course (“Studienkolleg”) before you are allowed to enrol.

For People from non-EU Countries

The first thing to do is to find out whether your university entrance qualification is recognised in Germany. The can help you with this. Simply enter the country where you attained your secondary school-leaving certificate. You will then learn whether your certificate is

The DAAD entrance qualification database only provides a general overview. You can obtain more specific data about other countries and certificates at Anabin. This database includes information on how foreign secondary school-leaving certificates are evaluated. On the website, you can specify your country and certificate when searching the database. It provides all relevant information, e. g. whether your certificate will be recognised and whether you will need to fulfil further requirements. The website, however, is only available in German.

Ask the University

The final decision on admission always rests with the higher education institution at which you are applying. For that reason, you should always ask in advance whether you meet the requirements. Almost all universities have an International Office, or Akademisches Auslandsamt. Here international students can get lots of useful advice about living and studying in Germany.

A formal university entrance qualification is sometimes not required from talented candidates applying for admission to artistic subjects. Depending on the university, you may have to submit samples of your work or pass an aptitude test instead.

If your School Qualifications don’t meet the Requirements

You will be examined in several subjects that are important for your choice of study programme after completing your preparatory course at the Studienkolleg. This examination is called a Feststellungsprüfung, or assessment exam. A language test is a part of it.

For EU Nationals

If you come from an EU country (or Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway or Switzerland) and your school-leaving certificate is recognised in that country, it is often recognised in Germany, as well. This also applies if you received an “Abitur” from one of more than 140 German Schools abroad. In that case you have the same status as someone who has been educated to upper secondary level in Germany and you are thereby on an equal footing with German citizens.

If you want to study at a German higher education institution you will have to meet certain requirements. The most important prerequisites for applying are explained here.

Higher education entrance qualification

If you come from an EU country, from Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway or Switzerland and have a school-leaving certificate that qualifies you for higher education there, it will usually also allow you to study in Germany. If you come from outside the EU, two or three semesters of study in your home country are often sufficient, depending on where you are from. In artistic subjects, especially talented applicants are sometimes admitted based on work samples or aptitude tests alone.

You can use the (currently information on more than 130 countries available) to check whether your higher education entrance qualification is recognised in Germany. It will tell you whether and with what type of admission ( subject-related or general ) your qualifications make you eligible to study in Germany. Even more detailed information on all countries can be found in the (only in German).

TIP: Always also ask the of your chosen higher education institution whether you meet the requirements, as ultimately it is the higher education institution that decides on your application.

DATABASE ON ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

The allows international students to check whether they meet the requirements for the degree programme of their choice in Germany.

RECOGNITION OF THE IB-DIPLOMA IN GERMANY

The International Baccalaureate Diploma (IB diploma) is a school-leaving qualification that is awarded by the Geneva-based, private sector International Baccalaureate (IB) Organisation and can be earned at thousands of schools worldwide.

Under certain conditions, the IB diploma is recognised as a higher education entrance qualification in Germany.

RECOGNITION OF THE GENERAL CERTIFICATE OF EDUCATION (GCE) IN GERMANY

The alternative: foundation courses and higher education entrance examination

If your school-leaving certificate is not recognised as a higher education entrance qualification, you can take a foundation course. This course, which is held at facilities at universities and universities of applied sciences and lasts approximately two semesters, prepares you for your degree programme. It requires a good command of German (level B1 of the Common European Framework of Reference ) and a successful entrance examination. Classes take up 28 to 32 hours per week.

Other requirements

If you would like to find out whether you are fundamentally able to cope with the demands of studying in Germany before applying, you can take a at one of the many international test centres. This test will not only help you make your decision, but may even improve your chances of being admitted to the higher education institution of your choice.

TIP: There are many things you have to organise before going abroad to study, so it’s important to make sure you have all the information you need beforehand. Start checking the requirements early on so you are not disappointed.

University entrance qualification

Would you like to study at university? Then you need a university entrance qualification to prove that you have successfully completed your secondary education (Matura level). There is a difference between being qualified in general to enter a university and being qualified for a specific university course.

Having a general university entrance qualification means that in principle you may study at a higher education institution. Having a specific university entrance qualification means that you can be admitted onto a particular course. There are several different ways of gaining these qualifications:

An academic entrance qualification

This just means having your school leaving certificate recognised so you can be admitted onto a course. By ‘school leaving certificate’ we mean any certificate, papers or diplomas gained abroad which in the issuing country would give the right in principle to be admitted to study at university. These might be a Matura, Abitur or similar certificate, a record of state school leaving examinations, a record of limited higher education entrance examinations (‘Studying without a Matura’), or other equivalent qualification. This also includes school leaving certificates from European schools and the International Baccalaureate.

Who recognises a school leaving certificate?

At universities and university colleges of teacher education the Rectorate recognises these certificates. The admissions process is completed by the relevant academic department, which looks at the foreign school leaving certificate you have submitted. At universities of applied sciences, the programme director is responsible for this. The best thing to do is to approach your desired higher education institution directly and ask who undertakes the recognition process.

Three possibilities for recognition

There are basically three possibilities for acquiring a general university entrance qualification. This does not include recognition of a specific university entrance qualification, i.e. a qualification which would allow direct admission to the course of your choice in the country in which the school leaving certificate was issued.

Replacement certificates

Other forms of recognition

Besides the above types, other forms of recognition exist in other administrative areas.
Two important examples are:

Contact points

Please contact the academic department at the individual university or university college of teacher education, or the programme director at the university of applied sciences.

University entrance requirement – What German universities demand

German universities are rising in popularity amongst international students. Due to this high demand among applicants, German legislation and German universities need perspective students to fulfil certain requirements to be granted admission. You can find out about the various types of requirements and under which circumstances they apply in the following article.

Table of content

University entrance qualification

One of the most basic requirements that must be fulfilled by all applicants is the university entrance qualification (“Hochschulzugangsberechtigung” in German). This entrance qualification determines whether the education, training, work experience or studies that you obtained in your home country are sufficient for studies at a German institution and if so if there are any restrictions that apply. So, for example, if you obtained your Bachelor’s degree in a biology programme in your home country, you will likely be able to complete your Master’s studies in a similar field in Germany if your certification is accepted. However, it is unlikely that you would be able to further study in the fields of literature with this previous education.

To get an idea about which possibilities are open for you, you can check uni-assist’s data base. All you have to do is enter the country in which you obtained your degrees and tick the information boxes that are relevant to you. Once this is done, you will get a first impression of which courses, in general, are available for you. Please note that this is not a full representation of all universities in Germany. There are certain requirements that always need to be fulfilled (the “Hochschulzugangsberechtigung” is one of them), but there could also be additional requirements, depending on the institution you want to study at.

Special university requirements

So, in case you already found your dream university, it’s worth a shot to contact them directly and check, whether they accept your application or if additional documents or preparational courses (“Studienkollegs”) are required. Furthermore, especially universities with courses of study in creative fields, such as music and arts, often prefer a sample of your skills to the actual grades of your former studies.

Aside from the above-mentioned certificates or the Studienkolleg, many universities also value your final average degree for the admission process. This, however, strongly depends on the university you apply to and the course of studies you want to participate in. Very popular degree programmes such as the different medical disciplines traditionally place higher requirements on their applicants than other fields. In addition, very prestigious universities may impose certain minimum grades for their students before even considering them for application.

In some cases, universities also conduct application interviews in which applicants must convince the interviewers of their qualifications and will to study at their institution. This is, once again, a factor that you have to individually check with the universities you want to apply for. These selection criteria can be defined by the universities independently.

These interviews can come in all shapes and forms, also greatly dependent on the type of studies you are planning to pick up. For the creative arts, you might have to give a live demonstration of your skills in that field. Other universities might already use the interview to check your language skills first-hand or want to determine, what your motivations for studying in Germany are and if you fit into the community of the university. As you can see, there are lots of different things you can expect from a university interview. The best way to prepare for them is to have a rough idea of what you want to talk about and if requested, a presentation well-rehearsed. A good first impression can only be achieved once and is irredeemable, so give your best to show yourself from your best side and be confident in your skills. It is them that the university is most interested in, together with the person possessing them – you!

Что такое university entrance qualification

Your HZB is your secondary school certificate or university studies that you have started or completed. If you would like to study at the Anhalt University of Applied Sciences, you will need to show proof of a HZB. Usually, the university entrance qualification is a German Abitur, but under certain conditions a foreign university entrance qualification can fulfill the requirements to allow you to study in Germany.

Do I have a university entrance qualification (HZB)?

The Central Office for Foreign Education (ZaB) of the Standing Conference of the Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs of the Countries in the Federal Republic of Germany (KMK) determines how exactly foreign certificates are to be assessed.

On the DAAD website or at anabin.de you will find detailed information on the individual countries, including information on the official status of your university entrance qualification.

The service center for interational study application uni-assist e.V. verifies your university entrance qualification as well as language requirements for the chosen degree programme at Anhalt University of Applied Sciences.

uni-assist

Should your foreign university entrance qualification correspond with a German entrance qualification, a so-called HZB, you may apply directly via uni-assist to study at Anhalt University of Applied Sciences.

I do not have an HZB

Should you not be in possession of a sufficient German university entrance qualification (HZB), you are required to pass an «assessment test» first. The test consists of a German language proficiency test as well as examinations in 3-4 subjects relevant to your intended course of study. You may prepare for this test in a one-year course at our preparatory college (Studienkolleg).
